Defensive Driving Tips

Defensive driving means anticipating other drivers’ mistakes before they happen so that you can reduce your risk of being in an accident.

We will be giving some key defensive driving techniques.

  • Maintain a space cushion: It's good to keep 3/4 of a car's length in front of you to allow for reaction time.
  • Scan Ahead: Look at multiple cars ahead, not just the one in front, to anticipate traffic flow changes.
  • Check Blind Spots: Constantly scan surroundings and check mirrors frequently, especially when changing lanes or turning.
  • Signal early: Communicate intentions to other drivers well in advance.

Handling Aggressive Drivers and Hazards

  • Avoid eye contact:  Do NOT engage with angry drivers.
  • Give space:  Allow aggressive drivers to pass, rather than risking a confrontation.
  • Yield the right of way: Even if you are legally in the right, prioritize safety over being right to avoid a crash.
  • Stay Calm:  Keep emotions in check to make rational, safe decisions.

Benefits of Defensive Driving

  • Insurance Discount:  Most insurance companies will give up to 10% discount to those who've taken an approved defensive driving course.
  • Accident Prevention:  Defensive driving significantly reduces the likelihood of being involved in an accident or collision.
  • Point Reduction:  In many states, taking a defensive driving course can remove points from your driver's license.

In Georgia, the Department of Driver Services(DDS) regulates a 6- hour Driver Improvement Program (Defensive Driving) that can be used to dismiss tickets, reduce points, and satisfy court orders. Be sure to visit the Georgia Department of Driver Services website to see the certified courses.
